A Small Step Towards Change
At Northstar, change has never arrived through grand announcements. It begins quietly, in conversations, in questions, and in the courage to challenge what has always been accepted without thought.
We live in a community where, for generations, girls during their periods have been considered untouchable, distanced from daily life, and made to feel less valued. Each year, I hold sessions with learners who are just old enough to begin understanding the changes that come with puberty. We speak about the body; about growth, hormones, and cycles; but also about the invisible emotional waves that many girls experience during menstruation.
These sessions are never simple. Some learners listen silently, carrying beliefs they have grown up with. A few boys initially express hesitation, repeating what they have always heard, that girls should stay away and that they are somehow “different” during those days. Yet, as the conversations deepen, something shifts.
One day, while we were discussing the physical pain and emotional strain many girls go through, a boy raised his hand with genuine curiosity. “Ma’am, if girls go through so much, why don’t they share more and expect the community to understand?”
I paused, knowing the answer was heavier than the question. I spoke about social norms, about how silence is often taught, and how communities sometimes create walls that are hard to break even when someone wants to speak.
There was a brief stillness in the room. Then came a response I will never forget.
“Ma’am,” a few boys said softly, “we want to start with a small step. You tell us when you are going through your period cycle, and we will try to care for you in whatever way we can.”
At that moment, the lesson was no longer mine. It belonged to them. What began as a discussion about biology had transformed into empathy, into a willingness to unlearn and rebuild. Their words carried a promise, not of perfection, but of awareness.
Perhaps this is what community change truly looks like at Northstar. Not loud revolutions, but small, heartfelt steps taken by young minds who are learning to replace inherited judgments with compassion.
